How does a self-priming pump work?
A self-priming pump can lift water from a level below the pump inlet. It can handle a mixture of air and water until the suction system is purged and the pump reaches normal pumping mode.
The maximum suction height is up to 8 m, and this value must include the losses in the suction pipe. For stable operation, it is important that the suction pipe is correctly sized, bend-resistant and well sealed.
Suitable liquids
- Clean fresh water.
- Rainwater without solid particles.
- Clean, thin and non-aggressive liquids.
- Non-toxic and non-explosive liquids.
Installation guidelines
- The pump can be installed indoors or outdoors.
- For outdoor installation, provide protection against sun, rain, snow and frost.
- Place the pump as close to the water source as possible.
- Provide a free space of approximately 0.5 m on three sides for cooling and servicing.
- Install the pump on a stable horizontal base.
- The maximum slope of the base must not exceed 5°.
- Avoid air pockets, especially on the suction side.
- For long suction pipes, use a larger diameter to limit pressure losses.
- Do not use a collapsible hose for the suction pipe.
Choose a JP model
Models differ in maximum flow rate and maximum head. The number before the dash indicates the maximum flow rate, and the number after the dash indicates the maximum head of the pump.
| Model | Maximum flow rate | Maximum pressure | Power supply | Product number |

Construction and materials
The Grundfos JP is designed for long-term and reliable operation in water supply. The pump combines a stainless steel housing, composite hydraulic components and an air-cooled electric motor.
| Component | Material | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Pump housing | Stainless steel EN 1.4301 / AISI 304 | Durable main structure with good corrosion resistance. |
| Impeller | Composite | Ensures efficient transfer of energy to the water. |
| Diffuser | Composite | Promotes hydraulic efficiency and self-priming. |
| Venturi tube | Composite | Part of the built-in ejector for stable self-priming. |
| Shaft | Stainless steel | Transmits rotation from the engine to the impeller. |
| Mechanical seal | Carbon, ceramic, NBR | Provides sealing between the hydraulic and motor parts. |
| Base | Aluminum | Ensures stable attachment of the pump. |
| Lifting handle | Composite | Makes it easier to carry and position the pump. |

- JP 4-47: For standard domestic water supply, more consumers and up to about 4 m³/h flow rate.
- JP 4-54: For systems with up to approx. 4 m³/h flow and higher head requirements.
- JP 5-48: For higher water consumption, larger houses, garden irrigation and small agricultural applications.
Recommendation for automatic water supply
The standard JP pump is switched on and off by the user. For automatic start and stop according to demand, it can be combined with the Grundfos Pressure Manager. For constant comfort and compensation of small losses, a version with a pressure switch and a pressure vessel can also be used.
In case of an unstable water source and risk of dry running, JP PM Booster is recommended, as the Pressure Manager provides dry running protection and a function against frequent switching on.
The data is in accordance with the provided technical catalogue for Grundfos JP. Check the specific model, electrical supply, required flow rate, head and suction conditions before ordering and installation.
