Grundfos SP – submersible pumps for deep wells and boreholes
Grundfos SP is a series of energy-efficient submersible pumps for pumping clean water from deep wells, boreholes and underground water tanks. The pumps are available in a wide range of flow rates and heads, with different materials and the possibility of combining with a suitable submersible motor.
Main advantages of Grundfos SP
- Multistage centrifugal submersible pumps for clean water from wells and boreholes.
- Wide range of flow rates – from about 1 m³/h to over 280 m³/h depending on the model.
- Possibility to choose the number of stages to achieve the required pressure.
- Energy-efficient hydraulics, meeting pump efficiency requirements.
- Possibility of different materials: standard stainless steel and versions for more aggressive environments.
- Built-in check valve to prevent backflow when stopping.
- Water-lubricated bearings with sand channels that allow small particles to escape with the fluid.
- Inlet strainer that limits the entry of large particles into the pump.
- Possibility of combination with Grundfos MS and MMS submersible motors in various capacities and versions.
- Suitable for water supply, irrigation, groundwater lowering, fountains and industrial applications.
Applications
- Pumping raw water from underground wells and boreholes.
- Water supply to settlements, industrial sites and agricultural farms.
- Irrigation of agricultural areas and garden systems.
- Lowering groundwater levels during construction and mining activities.
- Fountain and decorative water systems.
- Industrial applications including mining and offshore installations.
How do you read the model designation?
The model designation follows the logic SP XY , where:
- SP – series of submersible well pumps.
- X – pump size and basic flow rate (e.g. 3A, 5A, 7, 9, 11, 14, 17, etc.).
- Y – number of stages that determines the head (e.g. -6, -9, -12, -17, etc.).
A higher number before the dash means a higher possible flow rate. A higher number after the dash means more stages and higher head.
Working conditions
- The pumps are designed for clean, non-aggressive liquids, similar to water.
- The maximum liquid temperature is usually up to 60 °C in standard versions.
- The minimum flow around the motor must provide sufficient cooling.
- It is recommended that the pump not operate for a long time at a flow rate that is too low or too high compared to the nominal flow rate.
- For more aggressive fluids, versions with suitable materials and seals are available.
Installation guidelines
- The pump is installed vertically in the borehole or well, submerged below the water level.
- The recommended minimum borehole diameter depends on the pump model and any connecting elements.
- Sufficient water flow around the motor must be ensured for proper cooling.
- When installing in a borehole, follow the recommendations for minimum hole diameter according to the model.
- Use appropriate check valves, shut-off valves and surge and lightning protection.
Construction and materials
Grundfos SP are multistage centrifugal pumps with radial impellers, made mainly of stainless steel. The design is lightweight, which facilitates installation and maintenance in wells and boreholes.
Main components and materials
| Component | Material (standard) | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Valve body and pump chambers | Stainless steel | Basic construction of the hydraulic part. |
| Impellers | Stainless steel | They transmit the energy of the water and provide pressure. |
| Shaft | Stainless steel | It transmits rotation from the motor to the impellers. |
| Camps | Water-lubricated, with rubber or composite elements | They ensure shaft stability and allow the passage of small particles. |
| Inlet strainer | Stainless steel | Limits the entry of large particles into the pump. |
| Check valve | Built into the pump part | Prevents backflow when the pump stops. |
| Gaskets | NBR, FKM (depending on version) | They ensure tightness and resistance to various liquids and temperatures. |
Material implementations
The SP series is available in different material versions according to the aggressiveness of the environment:
- Standard version: Stainless steel for clean water and normal conditions.
- Performance for more aggressive environments: Special grades of stainless steel and seals for higher corrosion resistance.
- Eco performance (SP NE): For aggressive and slightly contaminated liquids, with improved component resistance.
Design advantages
- Water-lubricated bearings with sand channels: Allow small solid particles to escape with the fluid, reducing the risk of seizing.
- Inlet strainer: Protects the pump from large particles and fibers entering.
- Built-in check valve: Reduces the risk of water hammer and reverse flow when stopping.
- Lightweight stainless steel construction: Easy installation and maintenance in wells and boreholes.
- Multi-stage hydraulics: Allows flexible selection of pressure by changing the number of stages.
- Compatibility with different motors: Ability to choose a motor according to the application and conditions.
Approvals and safety
Grundfos SP is designed for use with clean water in wells, boreholes and industrial systems. The pumps meet the applicable European requirements for efficiency and safety. [31]
Efficiency
Some SP models meet the requirements of the ErP directive for energy efficiency of pumps, with a minimum efficiency index MEI ≥ 0.40 and in many cases above 0.70 for the most efficient models. [31]
Safe operation
- Use the pump only for the intended liquids and operating conditions.
- Ensure sufficient flow around the motor for proper cooling.
- Follow the recommendations for minimum drilling diameter and installation depth.
- Use appropriate electrical protection (motor fuse, surge and lightning protection).
- When working with aggressive or hazardous liquids, observe special safety and material requirements.
- Always disconnect power before servicing or removing.
Comparison of Grundfos SP models
