Wastewater lifting systems (sewer pumping stations, lift stations) are used when the terrain, the location of the building, or the lack of sufficient slope do not allow for gravity drainage of wastewater to the main sewer, septic system, or treatment plant.

The system includes a sump or tank (wet well) in which wastewater is collected, one or more submersible sewage pumps, floats or other level sensors, a control panel, fittings, and a pressure pipeline (force main) that pushes the water to a higher point in the sewer network.
